Some time in the near future, my Blue Knights Chapter wants to go for a ride, or the wives of members do, to the Whistle Stop Cafe in Juliette, Georgia where the movie, “Fried Green Tomatoes” was filmed in 1991. Not wanting to lead a group blindly to an area I’ve never been, I planned a route there and transferred it to the GPS so that Donna and I could ride it ourselves and make sure everything worked right. Today a friend of ours, Jan joined us on her BMW R1200C motorcycle for a ride to lunch at the Whistle Stop Cafe. We met in Dawsonville, Georgia and rode down, not using a single interstate highway. Along the way we went through Gainesville, Hoschton, Winder, Monroe and Monticello. As we were traveling south we noticed the dogwoods were already blooming. Part of our ride took us under a canopy of pecan trees which will be nice later on.
When we arrived of course the cafe offered an appetizer of fried green tomatoes! The menu is short and limited and the good was good. There’s a request on the menu to not steal it. Damned souvenir hunters! There’s a nice row of shops in Juliette where we even bought a bottle of muscadine wine to bring home.
We rode a total of 289 miles today, round trip door to door. While the ride doesn’t have the twisty, curvy mountain roads that north Georgia does it will be a nice scenic and leisurely ride to take the group on soon. Oh and there was only a 10% chance of rain forecast today and we found it on the way home. It wasn’t much rain though, just enough the wet the windshield on the motorcycle.
